Day 3 - A new shelf for the new flat screen

For Christmas we recieved a new 40" flat screen TV with the assistance of our son Andrew, who has a  Satalite TV business. Along with it was a wall bracket to mount it to the wall.

After searching for studs in the wall of our old house, secureing the bracet to the wall with lag screws and putting the hangers on the back of the TV, we hung it and enjoyed the TV for the evening.  The next day when it was turned on, there was a 2" white vertical band on the right side of the screen.  Andrew called Toshiba and before we knew, Steve from Don's Television Repair was at our door to pick up the TV.  He said they would call when it was done.  We waited for the call, but when it came, the news was not good. Yes, Toshiba had agreed to replace the screen, but the hanging bracket that I put on the back could not be removed and Toshiba says they will not pay to remove it or repair the TV until it is taken off. Three of the nuts were striped and the bolts could not be removed. Steve was very sorry, but there was nothing he could do. He returned the TV.  I sat in my living room looking at the back side of my new broken TV. He was right, no amount of prying or turning would remove the bolts from the recessed nuts on the back of the TV. I had an old fashioned idea ... 10 minuets later I called Steve and told him the TV was ready to pick up.

Hacksaw!

The idea of putting the bracket and hangers up again did not appeal to us and it was snowy and cold today, so I spent the day building a shelf  for the TV to sit on and a lower bookshelf for the digital box and the DVD player.  Guess I will have to Spackle and paint the holes from the bracket.
