Every year, the cattlemen burn the old dry grass in the Flint Hills. This is actually a good thing, because the fire stimulates the roots to grow new grass faster than it would without burning.
The topsoild in the Flint Hills is practically non-existant, as you can see in the background.
There is little danger of the fire doing anything but burn away last year's growth.

The cattle are all loured to a truck with hay in the back, as it drives very slowly away from the burn area.
All that remains is to gather the strays.
